With the competition and global reach of internet radio upon us, traditional FM radio - at least the public and non-commercial kind - is fundamentally changing and will have to keep doing so to survive.

Although there now seems to be less ambient shows on FM radio than there used to be, many of of the pioneering FM ambient shows like Musical Starstreams, Music From The Hearts Of Space and Echoes have thrived and grown by simulcasting live on the net and hosting extensive audio archives on a subscription basis.

Ambience - On WWUH 91.3 FM, West Hartford, Connecticut USA since 1984. Ambient acoustic and electronic music from around the world. Also home to the retro electronic/ambient/rock program The Greatest Show From Earth. Both shows are streamed live online.

Below Zero - Downtempo radio show on Energy 92.7 FM San Fransisco and also streaming past shows at net station Live 365.

Codos Traumreisen - Electronic ambient show from Germany heard on Dortmund FM station Eldoradio and streamed live online.

Deep Intense - Downtempo & ambient music site based in Canada with an FM radio show, reviews, charts and ambient web directory.

Echoes - A wonderful institution, this is a long-running networked American public FM radio show hosted by John Diliberto and with an online subscriber audio archive.

Music From The Hearts Of Space - Another legendary North American FM radio show, this one produced by Stephan Hill and now with all of its one-hour broadcasts stored in an audio archive on-line.

Musical Starstreams - For lovers of ambient exotica this brilliant U.S. public radio show is hosted by DJ Forest from Waveform Records.

Slackline Radio - Various electronica and downtempo styles including trip hop and nu jazz every Wednesday night on KRUA 88.1 FM in Anchorage, Alaska.

Stars End - Founded in 1976, this is another one of the USA's pioneering ambient radio shows, 5 hours of music every Sunday morning from 1am to 6am on Philadelphia radio station WXPN 88.5 FM and streamed live on the net.

Ultima Thule - Sydney's longest running ambient radio show, heard on 2MBS-FM Sydney, 5MBS-FM Adelaide and Artsound-FM Canberra. The site includes a free MP3 audio archive of past shows and subscription info for Podcast downloads. I co-produced this show from 2001 to 2006.
